The 3 Main Types of Plans for Electricity in Arlington

Energy companies have different options that can sound complicated. No need to worry — most options can be broken down into three different categories: variable rate, fixed-rate, and indexed plans.

1. Variable Rate Plans

The variable rate plan is flexible, which is ideal for temporary living situations or short contracts. The price of electricity varies from month to month and are affected by the cost of energy. There are usually no cancellation fees and or contracts, but rates can be notably higher as the market fluctuates.

2. Fixed-Rate Plans

The fixed-rate plan is a simple, locked-in, unchanging energy price for the duration of your contract. For example, if you signed a contract for a year, then the price of energy would stay the same for the entire year. Your energy bill would then be based on how much electricity you use. Fixed-rate plans tend to be the most popular among energy customers.

APG&E primarily offers fixed-price plans. Their simplicity prevents billing surprises when energy prices rise, which is why we recommend these plans to our own family and friends. We work hard to provide competitive fixed rates and excellent customer service to the Arlington community and greater DFW area.

3. Indexed Rate or Wholesale Plans

The index price plan is more complex. With this plan, your electricity rate is composed of two parts: a real-time market price for electricity, and a set amount added each bill that is locked in and agreed upon at the start of the contract. While the added set amount is fixed, the price of electricity is based upon actual market price and can save you money if the market price is low. However, this type of plan can leave you open to sharp market increases, which can make your bill go up.

Many Texas electricity customers enrolled in wholesale plans found themselves with hundreds, thousands, or even tens of thousands of dollars in energy bills following the February 2021 winter storm, when rates spiked and demand increased. A fixed-rate plan protects against these unforeseen and potentially devastating events.

Thinking of Switching Electricity Companies in Arlington, TX? It’s Simple!

Don’t let any electricity company in Arlington scare you from knowing the truth. You can view your contract either online or over the phone and can even switch energy companies if you want to.

1. Check Your Contract Status

Depending on your electricity plan, you may be able to terminate your current plan without any fee. Each electricity company and plan are different—for example, most variable-rate plans don’t charge cancellation fees and are typically shorter than other plans. You can check out the status of your energy contract by calling your energy provider or looking at your monthly bill. The Public Utility Commission states that you are allowed to switch providers at least two weeks before your contract expires.

2. Do Your Research, then Compare

Texas is home to many different energy companies, with different plans and prices. It is important to do your research and ensure that you pick the best plan for you and your energy needs. It’s best to pick an electricity company in Arlington, TX that is flexible and affordable, like APG&E. We have a variety of different energy options and helpful customer service agents to help you and your wallet.

3. Sign Up

The next step? Signing up. Texas energy companies complete credit checks, so be prepared to provide a social security number. Don’t worry about your payment history—companies can’t see that.
