How Usage Credit Plans Work (And How to Make Sure You Get the Credit)

APG&E's usage credit plan rewards you with $100 off your bill when you hit 1,000 kWh during each billing cycle. Here's how it works, who it's right for, and how to track your usage mid-cycle so you don't miss the credit.

If you've ever signed up for an electricity plan with a bill credit and then questioned why it wasn't on your bill, you're not alone. Usage credit plans are one of the most popular plan types, but they're also one of the most misunderstood.

If you've ever wondered, "How do usage credit electricity plans work?", this guide explains the basics for customers and shows how to make sure you qualify to receive the credit.

What Is a Usage Credit Plan?

A usage credit plan is a type of electricity plan that gives you a dollar credit on your monthly bill when your energy usage reaches a set threshold. At APG&E, an example of one of our plans would be: use 1,000 kWh or more in a billing cycle, and we apply a $100 credit to that specific bill automatically.

No forms. No promo codes. It's built into the plan.

Where Confusion Often Happens

The credit is not automatic every month. It's conditional.

If your usage falls below 1,000 kWh in a given billing cycle, the credit doesn't apply that month. You'll pay your standard energy rate with your utility pass-through fees without the credit. The next month, the threshold resets and you have another chance to earn it.

This is the detail that causes the most confusion. So, we want to be clear about it upfront.

Here's a simple way to think about it:

Example of Monthly Usage

What Happens

Under 1,000 kWh

No credit that month

1,000 kWh or more

$100 credit applied automatically

Even 999 kWh won't trigger the credit. The threshold is a hard cutoff, not an estimate.

What Counts Toward Your 1,000 kWh?

All residential electricity usage at your service address during your billing cycle counts. That includes your A/C, appliances, lighting, EV charging, everything running through your meter.

One thing to note: your billing cycle is based on your meter read dates, not the calendar month. Your cycle might run from the 8th to the 7th, for example. Your first bill will show your exact dates.

Is a Usage Credit Plan Right for You?

Usage credit plans tend to work best for households with consistent usage, in order to qualify as much as possible throughout your contract. A good fit usually looks like this for a 1,000 or 2,000 kWh usage credit product:

  • A 2-3 bedroom home with central A/C that runs regularly
  • Someone who works from home or has people in the house during the day
  • A home with electric appliances: washer/dryer, dishwasher, electric water heater
  • A household that doesn't travel frequently for long stretches

If your home uses less energy, or if you're away for extended periods, a flat-rate or variable plan might be a better fit.

Q&A

  • Question: Do I need to do anything to receive the usage credit each month?
    • Short answer: No action is required. The credit is built into the plan and is applied automatically in any billing cycle where your usage reaches at least 1,000 kWh. If you’re under 1,000 kWh for that cycle, no credit is applied for that month. The threshold resets each billing cycle (based on your meter read dates), and even 999 kWh won’t qualify.
  • Question: What exactly counts toward the 1,000 kWh threshold?
    • Short answer: All residential electricity usage recorded by your meter at your service address during your billing cycle counts—A/C, appliances, lighting, EV charging, everything through the meter. It’s tied to your meter read dates (for example, the 8th to the 7th), not the calendar month.
  • Question: Is a usage credit plan a good fit for my household?
    • Short answer: It’s ideal for homes with consistent, moderate-to-high usage—think a 2–3 bedroom home with central A/C that runs regularly, people home during the day, and electric appliances. If your usage is lower or you’re away for long stretches, a flat-rate or variable plan may be a better fit. You can compare options anytime at apge.com.
  • Question: Why didn’t I receive the credit this month even though I got it last month?
    • Short answer: The credit is conditional each billing cycle. If your usage didn’t reach 1,000 kWh in that specific cycle, the credit won’t apply for that bill. Confirm your cycle dates on your bill (they may not match the calendar month). If you believe you qualified but don’t see the credit, contact 1-866-537-4315 or customer@apge.com.
