Want to Save on Your Electric Bill? Start with These 2 Numbers

The two numbers that determine your electricity bill are your kWh usage and your rate per kWh. Here's how to find both and use them to lower what you pay.

The two numbers that determine your electricity bill are simple: how much electricity you use (measured in kWh) and how much you pay per kWh. Every strategy for lowering your bill comes down to one of those two levers

What Is kWh Usage and Why Does It Matter?

Your electricity usage is measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh), and this number shows how much energy you actually used during your billing cycle. The more kWh you use, the higher your bill will be.

Knowing your usage gives you a clear baseline. From there, you can:

  • Spot trends, like spikes during the summer when your A/C is running
  • Make small changes, such as adjusting your thermostat or switching to LED bulbs
  • Track your savings from month to month

Not sure how your usage compares? The average Texas household uses about 1,200 kWh per month. Log in to your APG&E MyAccount to see your monthly usage history.

What Are You Actually Paying Per kWh?

This is the rate you're charged for each unit of electricity. If you’re on a fixed-rate plan, that price stays the same throughout your contract. If you're on a variable plan, the rate can change based on the market.

Understanding your price per kWh helps you:

  • Compare your current rate to other available plans
  • Decide whether now is a good time to lock in a long-term plan
  • Estimate your monthly bill based on your usage

If your rate is the problem that's the easier fix.

APG&E's fixed-rate plans lock in your price per kWh so your bill only goes up when your usage does.
